Parasites are a common to Alpacas just like cats and dogs and need to be taken seriously. Just completely worming the whole herd each year is not the best approach as the worms become resistant to the wormer, plus different treatments are required to treat different worm burdens.
Here at Shareshill Alpacas we have the capability to regularly screen our herd to ensure burdens are low, we only treat the Alpacas that have a high count and then with the correct treatment.
All new Alpacas that enter our farm are segregated and quarantined until tested.
The common type of worms that Alapcas contract are:
Spring and Autumn are good times to perform a screen, but if any animals looks down or especially anemic then we test them straight away.
