Shearing Alpacas

The Shearing Process.

Here at Shareshill Alpacas we shear our animals ourselves once a year, this is usually completed in June when the weather is warmer. Not only do we shear them, but trim the feet, check and file the teeth, vaccinate and microchip.

We generally start off with the white Alpacas and work our way through to the darker colours, this reduces the fibre contamination.

The saddle is removed first, skirted and bagged up, the seconds are then removed and finally the remainder of the fleece is bagged up together.

We use a harness, that consists of bars to keep the legs spread and ropes and block to restrain them correctly.
